Understanding the properties of polymers is a vital step in optimising their performance. Renishaw's Raman systems provide you with the power and flexibility to investigate all polymer types.
Analyse all polymers
There are thousands of polymers, many of which are very widely used. Maximise your chances of identifying them by using SynchroScan spectrum acquisition and database searching. SynchroScan gives you all the Raman bands at high spectral resolution. This makes searching the entries in the Renishaw polymer database easy and reliable.
Raman spectroscopy enables you to:
- characterise laminate films, without the need to mechanically section them
- study polymer blends
- analyse stress in fibres
- determine crystallinity levels
- study the materials used to encapsulate photovoltaics
- investigate novel polymers, such as conducting polymers
Determine layer thicknesses with accuracy
You can use Raman scattering to determine the composition and thicknesses of transparent polymer laminates. You need a system with good depth resolution and accurate sample positioning in all three dimensions to analyse these successfully. The inVia confocal Raman microscope, with its Easy Confocal technology, and HSES sample stage, is ideal for this task.
Study physical changes using LiveTrack™
LiveTrack focus tracking technology maintains optimum focus in real-time when samples expand, contract, or change phase. This enables the study of dynamic, physical changes in your sample.
Changes in some polymer parameters (such as crystallinity) produce relatively subtle changes to the Raman spectrum. The high spectral resolution, precision, and stability of Renishaw's inVia confocal Raman microscope enable you to see these changes.

Application note: Analysing microplastics with the inVia™ confocal Raman microscope
Plastics are extensively used in products and packaging and, unfortunately, make their way into the environment, causing significant issues for wildlife. In addition to concerns about bulk plastic contamination, there has been much interest in microplastics. Raman spectroscopy, an optical scattering technique, has much to offer researchers investigating plastics, as it can identify them rapidly and non-destructively.
Application note: Study polymers with the inVia confocal Raman microscope
The Renishaw inVia confocal Raman microscope is ideal for the 2D and 3D chemical analysis of polymers. Synthetic polymers display a broad range of properties and are extensively used in modern products. The study of polymers in terms of identification, spatial distribution and concentration is important as we search for novel materials, improve effectiveness of existing materials, and reduce the costs of products. The inVia microscope provides chemical specificity and sensitivity, in a non-destructive manner, with no sample manipulation and preparation required.
Technical note: Using the inVia Raman microscope for locating and characterising microplastics
Renishaw’s inVia confocal Raman microscope is ideally suited to the analysis of microplastics. A combination of optical and Raman imaging techniques with Renishaw's WiRE software are used to locate, image and characterise particles.
